Is Fuzheng Huayu Capsule Effective in Treating Liver Cirrhosis?

Jiang Weimin, Chief Physician
Department of Infectious Diseases, Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University

Fuzheng Huayu Capsule is relatively effective in treating liver cirrhosis. It is a medication recommended by the Chinese Medical Association and has demonstrated certain therapeutic effects on liver fibrosis. Therefore, Fuzheng Huayu Capsule can indeed be used to treat liver cirrhosis, although it cannot completely cure the condition—it primarily exerts antifibrotic effects.

The treatment outcomes are relatively favorable for patients with early-stage liver cirrhosis. However, for those with advanced liver cirrhosis, the efficacy is generally not as significant. Thus, the suitability of this medication should be determined based on the severity of the condition. Fuzheng Huayu Capsule primarily works by softening the liver and resolving nodules, thereby potentially reversing cirrhosis to fibrosis.

As such, its use should be tailored to the patient’s specific condition. Additionally, treatment should address the underlying cause of the disease, and regular monitoring—such as liver ultrasound examinations—should be conducted to assess the patient’s progress.

The Functions of Fuzheng Huayu Capsule

Fuzheng Huayu Capsule is a well-established traditional Chinese patent medicine used for the treatment of liver cirrhosis. Its main ingredients include salvia miltiorrhiza (丹参), cordyceps (虫草), peach kernel (桃仁), pine pollen (松花粉), gynostemma (绞股蓝), and schisandra (五味子). Animal studies have confirmed that it can degrade fibrosis within liver cells and potentially reverse early-stage liver cirrhosis. It is recommended in the integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine guidelines for the treatment of liver cirrhosis.

However, Fuzheng Huayu Capsule is not suitable for all patients with liver cirrhosis. It is primarily intended for those with liver and kidney deficiency (肝肾不足) and internal blood stasis (瘀血内阻). Symptoms of liver and kidney deficiency may include fatigue, dizziness, blurred vision, dry eyes, reduced visual acuity, and soreness or weakness in the lower back and knees. Signs of internal blood stasis may include a dull complexion, spider angiomas, a grayish or dark tongue with ecchymosis (bruise-like spots) along the edges, and sublingual varicose veins. Liver cirrhosis patients presenting with the above symptoms may consider oral administration of Fuzheng Huayu Capsule under professional guidance.
